While relationships between students and professors aren't unheard of, they can be a source for all kinds of problems.
First things first: A student must be 18 years old to legally be able to consent to a relationship with an adult.
"While it isn't specifically addressed in our regulations, I do think that we would find a faculty-student relationship ruled out tacitly by our other policies, particularly with respect to sexual harassment and notions of professional conduct," he said.
The law says that anyone in a position of trust cannot have any sexual contact with a person in their care, even when they are over the age of consent at 16.As a member of the faculty and through their influence with other faculty (who may teach the student), the professor holds power over the student.Many schools look down on professor/student dating because of these reasons.The reason for this is that the adult is in a position of responsibility and they are there to look out for the best interests of the young person in their care.Someone in a position of trust is classed as a teacher or someone whose job it is to look after you, so if you were in hospital, or in residential care, the people looking after you would also be breaking the law if they were to have a sexual relationship with you.Beyond that, some schools have specific rules about what to do if a student and a professor want to pursue a romantic relationship.If that's the case at your institution, know that the answer to your dating question lies in the faculty and/or student handbook.Sexual contact or indecent exposure with a minor is a felony that requires the perpetrator to register as a sex offender.It also is a felony for a teacher to engage in a sexual relationship with a student, even if that student is of the legal age of consent.This prohibition includes students enrolled in schools where the teacher isn’t employed.A school district must complete an investigation into allegations of educator misconduct, even if the educator resigns from the school district. Are they two consenting adults in love, or is it sexual harassment and exploitation?A more stringent regulation, which would have banned romance between all professors and undergraduates, was voted down.The newly enacted Every Student Succeeds Act prohibits school employees from aiding another school employee in obtaining a new job if there is probable cause to believe there has been sexual misconduct with a minor or student.
